Fat Tuesday is a tradition in Christian religions where people enjoy large feasts prior to the 40-day fasting period of Lent. Fat Tuesday is also known as Mardi Gras. It is celebrated all around the world and even in countries outside of the US. Carnival is a large celebration that coincides with Mardi Gras and is traditionally rooted in Brazil. When it comes to the States though, there is no other place that does Mardi Gras as well as the South! New Orleans is the most well-known Mardi Gras destination with its parades, music, and bead tosses. In Destin, we aren't too far from New Orleans and are just close enough to carry on some of the New Orleans Mardi Gras traditions ourselves! About 250 miles east of New Orleans, Destin throws its own Mardi Gras celebration.
Through the weekend there have been parades and pub crawls. This Tuesday is the last hoorah for those looking to indulge before Mardi Gras comes to a close. Here are a few things to do in Destin on Fat Tuesday:
1. Attend the Fat Tuesday Celebration at HarborWalk Village. The celebration will take place from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The festivities include free food, bead tosses, a parade with stilt walkers and floats, and fun at all the HarborWalk Village vendors.
2. Dress up your pet for the Mardi PAWS Celebration. Your dressed up animal can enter into the costume contest for a chance to win first, second, or third prize! The event takes place from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
3. Let the good times roll at the 15th Annual Fat Tuesday Baytowne Bash Parade. Watch some of the flashiest and showiest floats travel through Baytowne and shout for beads. There will be street performers and entertainment for everyone. The parade will begin at 5:00 pm in The Village of Baytowne Wharf.
